Jorge Gomez, 29
Project manager, Guarantee Glass Inc., Walnut Creek, Calif.
Before moving into contract glazing, Gomez worked on the supplier side of the industry, selling hardware to glazing companies. The shift to reading project plans in an office was a challenge, but he relied on business fundamentals to make the change. “I like a challenge. You have to be teachable and quiet. And the most important thing to me is to be straight up with people. If you have news to tell them, even if it’s bad news, don’t deviate from the truth. You’ll always lose if you do.”

Gomez also believes his time spent selling hardware gave him an edge in understanding the glazing projects he now manages. “A lot of glazing companies would call on me to get quotes and I’d pull it together and get it shipped out. It was a big challenge because I went from hardware sales and installations in the field to an office and learning how to read plans and things like that. But it was a good challenge.”
