Mark Funke wasn’t looking for a career in the glass industry when he started at Franklin County Glass after graduating high school in 2001. However, more than 10 years later, Funke now owns his own glass business, Funke Glass & Glazing in Rosebud, Mo., specializing in custom shower enclosures, custom mirrors, glass replacement, glass table tops, commercial storefronts and automotive glass. Funke handles the day-to-day operation of the company, but is still an active installer as well. Funke says the key to success in the glass industry is “building trust and long-lasting relationships with customers; employing the right people to get the job done, and working together as a team.”
Describe a memorable, challenging project that you completed. How did you overcome those challenges?
The most challenging job was a ¾-inch custom, raised glass countertop for a private residence in Town & Country, Mo. The bar is free standing and made up of three lites of PPG Starphire low-iron tempered glass laminated together. We sandblasted the underside of the bar, drilled holes for 2-inch stainless steel stand offs, mounted the glass to the counter and then broke the center lite to create a shatter glass effect. It was a challenge to convince the vendors to fabricate a project like this for us. I was so nervous, I almost got sick before breaking the glass, but everything came together great.
