Decorative glass types, terminology
Acid etched
Glass with an acidic or caustic substance applied to the surface to diffuse transmitted light, reduce glare and give it a frosted appearance. The substance can be applied over the entire piece of glass or in selective areas creating a decorative pattern. Also see Satin etched.
Bent/curved
Flat glass altered into a curved shape using a mold and extreme heat. Decora-tive patterns are available using a ceramic frit ink to create the design. Bent or curved glass can also be heat treated or further manufactured into curved laminated safety glass or curved insulating glass units.
Carved
A three-dimensional sculpted image created by carving or etching a relief design into the surface of glass. This is typically done using an abrasive material such as silica sand or aluminum oxide, but can also be achieved with an acidic or caustic substance. A more detailed design is sometimes obtained by using differing depths within the carved image.
Cast glass
A molded or textured glass manufactured by using one of three different production methods.
Also called slumped or kiln formed glass, it is made by placing float glass in a kiln over top of a mold with the desired pattern embossed into it. The glass is heated to its softening point and slumps to the shape of the mold. It is then annealed and can be further processed or fabricated.
The second type of cast glass is hot cast and is produced by pouring molten glass into molds and pressed. This is typically used for hollow ware and lighting sconces and is usually limited to small sizes.
The third type has a recurring image impressed onto one or both sides during manufacture. The glass ribbon goes between two rollers while still soft or malleable and is imprinted with the desired texture. It is generally known as patterned, textured, obscure or rolled glass.
Ceramic frit
A pigmented glass enamel fired onto the glass at temperatures in excess of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and permanently fused to the glass surface. Ceramic frit can be applied using a full coverage coating process, a silkscreen process or a pre-printed ceramic decal. This type of decorative glass is available in many colors, patterns and translucencies and is used for both exterior and interior applications.
Channel glass
A structural glass system that creates light transmitting walls. A perimeter frame is used with various widths and sizes of “U” shaped glass channels. As exterior window wall, channel glass respective to windload requires only one perimeter frame, eliminating need for vertical or horizontal frame members. The system also allows for glass openings to be formed into arcs, serpentine walls, and columns or tower designs. Non-tempered float glass channels have a cast surface that provides privacy and light diffusion.
Decorative films
Translucent or opaque films with a pressure sensitive adhesive applied to the glass surface either full coverage over the entire piece of glass or selectively to create a decorative pattern. These films are available in many colors and translucencies; some have a decorative pattern embedded in the film.
Dichroic
A decorative technique created by applying multiple microlayers of metal oxides to the surface of glass. These thin layers of oxides have a total thickness of 3 millionths to 5 millionths of an inch and are kiln fired to fuse to the glass surface. Once fired, certain wavelengths of light will either pass through or be reflected, causing an array of color.
Etched
A generic term for the treatment of the glass surface to diffuse transmitted light, reduce glare and give the glass a frosted appearance. This can be done with many different agents including acid, chemicals, abrasives, ceramic inks or adhesive films. Also see Frosted.
Frosted
A generic term for the treatment of the glass surface to diffuse transmitted light and give it a frosted appearance. This can be done with many different agents including acid, chemicals, abrasives, ceramic inks or adhesive films. Also see Etched.
Fused
Two or more types or colors of glass with similar properties are placed in a kiln and fused together through melting. Many art glass pieces and ornate tableware are made from fused glass.
Heat-sculpted
Refers to art glass pieces produced using the application of heat to cause changes in the surface texture or glass shape. Once the final shape or texture is achieved, the glass is then re-annealed to ensure structural stability.
Molded
See the second type or cast glass II.
Obscure
See the third type or cast glass III.
Laminated
A type of multiply glass consisting of an assembly of two or more lites of glass bonded with an interlayer that holds together when shattered. Interlayers may be cast in resin or plastic sheet as in polyvinyl butyral or ethylene-vinyl acetate and are often available in clear, translucent, colored and opaque finishes. Many decorative materials and images also can be incorporated into laminated glass including decorative or metallic films, fabrics, rice paper, and other unique patterns. See ASTM C 1172 for Standard Specification.
Laser etched
Decorative glass that has had an image engraved into the surface using laser technology. Laser etching can provide a high detail, crisp engraved image. Although this method employs heat to etch the glass, the heat is localized and does not require subsequent re-annealing.
Mirrored
Glass with a surface treatment applied to create a reflective or mirrored quality. The substrate may be any type, pattern or color of glass in float or heat-treated form resulting in various reflective appearances. Also see Silvered.
Non-slip surface
A surface treatment that results in an increased static coefficient of friction, typically used for glass flooring systems, floor tiles and stair treads. The walkable surface is roughened either evenly across the entire surface or in a decorative pattern to provide increased safety and add a creative element to the flooring design.
Painted/back painted
A coating applied to glass that is virtually opaque and available in various solid and metallic colors. Typical applications for painted glass are wall cladding, spandrel glass and furniture.
Pattern/patterned
See the third type or cast glass III.
Sandblasted
A surface treatment produced by using compressed air to spray the glass with an abrasive to roughen one or both surfaces. Sandblasting the surface diffuses transmitted light, reduces glare and gives the glass a frosted appearance.
Satin etched
Glass with an acidic or caustic substance applied to the surface to diffuse transmitted light, reduce glare and give a frosted appearance. The substance can be applied over the entire piece of glass or in selective areas creating a decorative pattern. Also see Acid etched.
Silkscreened/screen-printed
Decorative glass created by applying inks to the surface through a screen-printing process. The ink can be applied in solid coverage over the entire piece or selectively to create a decorative pattern. This glass type is available in various colors, patterns and translucencies and is typically heat treated, however, some inks are available for use on annealed glass.
Silvered
Glass with a surface treatment applied to create a reflective or mirrored quality. The substrate may be any type, pattern or color of glass in float or heat-treated form resulting in various reflective appearances.
Slumped
See the first type or cast glass I.
Spandrel glass
Opaque coated glass used in non-vision areas of a building envelope. Various types of opacifiers can be used to create spandrel glass including ceramic frit, organic coatings and opacifying films.
Stained glass
Colored glass pieces combined to form decorative or pictorial designs, typically set in a lead framework.
Textured
See the third type or cast glass III.
V-groove
A shallow groove engraved into the surface of the glass in a “V” shape to form two small bevels. This process is available on most types of flat glass and mirror, and in various decorative patterns ranging from straight lines to ornate curved designs. Glass can be safely heat treated after engraving.
