Great Glazing: Sarasota Memorial Hospital expansion

The basics: Sarasota Memorial Hospital is undergoing a $250 million dollar, two-phase expansion project that will include energy-saving window systems, according to a Key Glass LLC release. The first phase of the expansion includes a three-story addition to the Critical Care Center and was completed in June 2011. The second phase is a nine-story Patient Bed Tower consisting of seven moderate-sized curtain walls spanning six stories, and six stories of precast concrete with curtain wall framing in punched openings, as well as another two-story curtain wall surrounding the ground floor main lobby. The bed tower project is slated to be complete in 2012.

The players: Construction manager Skanska USA Building; glass fabricator, Viracon; glazing system supplier, YKK America AP; glazing contractor, Key Glass LLC.

The glass and systems: 1 5/16-inch insulating units, laminated for impact resistance, Viracon Azuria tinted, and a low-emissivity coating. YKK 300 Series Curtain wall, and on the interior, fire-rated, tempered and storefront glazing with automatic entrances.
