Identify emergency exits
Many solutions prevent unauthorized entry while providing life safety. The most common and effective method is the panic device. Since patented in 1908, the panic bar has been securing doors while providing a safe and quick emergency exit.
Property managers, store owners and security personnel face security issues and common nuisances, such as accidental exit, pranks and other abuses. Solutions exist for both security and unwanted door usage. Manufacturers have engineered exit hardware with built-in delayed egress or unlocking and internal alarms that meet code. The Chexit Controlled Exit Device from Von Duprin, Indianapolis, provides immediate egress in the event a fire or smoke alarm is activated or the power fails. An alarm sounds and the door remains secure for 15 seconds in the event of pilferage, unauthorized entry or exit. The alarm can be disarmed for authorized use.
Specify the solution
A number of hardware solutions can ensure life safety while providing facility security. Be sure to specify the right panic device for your installation. All exit devices are labeled “panic hazard” or “fire exit hardware” indicating the proper application. Panic hardware is a device approved for panic hazard use and may be placed on doors that are not fire rated. Fire exit hardware is approved for use as panic hardware and has been tested for use on fire doors up to three hours. Von Duprin manufactures panic hardware for every application.
Fenestration access solutions
Controlling access on glass doors with narrow aluminum stiles can present a number of challenges to the integrator or security installer. The first priority: maintain the integrity of the design. Modern architectural openings can sometimes appear to be designed with little thought to security hardware installation. While codes often dictate the specification, the clean lines and unobstructed appearance of glass openings are desirable qualities of modern facilities.
Security and life safety can harmonize with design integrity. Where aluminum narrow stiles might have once presented installation problems, the Schalge King Corbra KC9000 offers the perfect solution. The architecturally designed series is a manually programmable electronic access lock specifically designed for openings with narrow door stiles where latches and deadbolts are used to secure the opening. The KC9000 trim has been engineered for Adams Rite deadbolts and latches, in addition to a variety of swing bolts and panic devices. The installer can choose from a wide selection of trim designs and finishes to match most existing hardware, making installation easy.
This new addition to the King Cobra family of access controls has an expanded scope of door and latch applications. Feature enhancements include three levels of access security: a 12-button keypad, iButton credential reader and a high-security key cylinder. The battery powered Schlage King Cobra offers the benefit of the iButton credential reader that requires the user to know more than a code to gain access. Security is increased by limiting the points of access where standard keys were once used because iButtons are nearly impossible to duplicate. Electronic credentials and electrified access controls give property managers and owners greater flexibility in maintaining control of their facilities. The unit can provide access to 120 individual users with extended programming capability for one-time use, freeze-out and passage.
