Innovative interlayer in Aria elevator glass
Spotlight on Las Vegas
Special GreatGlazing series for GlassBuild America 2010, Sept. 14-16 at the Las Vegas Convention Center
The basics: Even the elevators stand out at the stunning glass-clad Aria Resort & Casino in the Las Vegas CityCenter. The 61-story hotel, with 4,003 guest rooms, earned Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, and features 11 elevator cabs walled in decorative glass with a woven interlayer.
The players: Architect, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, New Haven, Conn.; elevator glass fabricator, M3 Glass Technologies, Irving, Texas; elevator cab fabricator, glass installer, Eklund's, Southlake, Texas; elevator supplier, Otis Elevator Co., Farmington, Conn.
The glass: The back wall of the cabs features laminated clear mirror glass. The side walls are a custom laminated glass consisting of 3 millimeter Starphire glass, a basket-weave textile encapsulated in a polyvinyl butyral interlayer, and 5 mm bronze mirror. "Laminating the textile was a challenge, as M3's processes had to be modified in order to eliminate all air bubbles and reach the proper level of adhesion," said Chris Mammen, president, M3 Glass Technologies.
