AGRSS speaks out on DOT 430, 628 recall
The Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standards Council urged registered shops to recall any glass they have installed related to the DOT 430 and 628 recalls, in a March 31 letter.
In December 2007, officials of Safelite, Columbus, Ohio, reported several DOT 430 part numbers to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington, D.C. These curved tempered replacement glass parts, manufactured by Hangzhou Safety Glass Ltd and supplied to Safelite by Auto Temp Inc., Batavia, Ohio, “may not break into small pieces as expected of tempered glass and fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205,” according to the NHTSA. “In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupants may be seriously injured by shattered glass.” For a list of the parts included in the DOT 430 recall, click here.
The recall affects about 1,600 units.
In March, PPG supplier Polymer Process Development LLC, Clinton Township, Mich., filed a formal recall notice with the NHTSA regarding the temper level of NAGS part number FB20415 ZPY, a replacement backlite for the 1999-2003 Lexus RX 300. The temper level resulted in a noncompliance with certain federal motor vehicle safety standards, according to Pittsburgh-based PPG. The parts in the recall were marked with DOT 430 or DOT 628 from China’s Hebei Tongyong Glass.
Wholesale Glass Automotive, an importer based in Patterson, N.J., sold the suspect glass parts to PPD, said Doug Sharbaugh, manager, supply chain, PPG North American automotive aftermarket, according to a report in Glass Global, March 20. In light of these recalls, AGRSS is urging registered shops to:
- Check sales and inventory for the parts in question.
- If you have such parts in your inventory, call the glass supplier to determine the appropriate disposition of the product and whether further action might be required.
- If you have sold the parts in question, issue a recall notice to the customer stating the part needs to be replaced.
- Keep a record of those who receive a recall notice.
