Officials from Brussels-based AGC Flat Glass Europe, formerly Glaverbel, announced AntiBacterial Glass that kills 99.9 percent of bacteria on its surface and stops the spread of fungi, according to a company release. Designed for hospital applications, the glass eliminates micro-organisms when they come in contact with the surface. The silver ions in the upper layers of the glass destroy bacteria by disabling their metabolism and disrupting their division mechanism, according to the release. The antibacterial function does not diminish over time, according to the release, and the glass can be used for all types of surfaces, from glazing to wall coverings to mirrors.
