Viracon Introduces Glass Identification Numbers for IGUs

An example VIN that will be lasered into each piece of glass Viracon fabricates

Viracon is introducing a glass identification number on all Viracon insulating glass units with its Viracon Thermal Spacer.

How it works

The new Viracon Identification Number (VIN) is a 24-digit number that will be discreetly laser printed into every piece of glass fabricated by Viracon. The VIN 24-digits includes 8 digits that are a unique code, providing detailed information about each and every insulating glass unit with VTS such as its thickness, size, substrate, print, heat treatment, manufacture date, and more.

Viracon offers an array of glass products from which to select, including thousands of combinations architects can choose when designing a building. With the Viracon VIN number system, if something happens to a glass unit, such as damage, the building owner can replace the insulating glass unit with the exact match based on Viracon’s VIN system.

“Adding VIN to our insulating glass units represents another way that Viracon is thinking about the future of buildings,” says Garret Henson, vice president of sales and marketing for Viracon. “Viracon and our strategic partners are continuously seeking to innovate and define the future of architectural glass technology and how to make the experience of using Viracon glass better for a building’s developer, owner and facility managers.”

How this innovation can help

Sometimes it becomes necessary to identify the makeup of the glass product installed on a building. For example, to replace a damaged piece of glass, when changes are being made to the existing façade, when a building is being expanded, or when another building is being added to a development or a campus.

When a building owner needs to know the makeup of an insulating glass unit there will be no more guesswork. They can locate the VIN found on the glass unit’s VTS, go to Viracon.com/VIN, answer a few questions, and hit “send.” Viracon will respond within 48 hours with all of the details behind that specific piece of glass.

Future-proofing today’s buildings means architects and building developers need to anticipate future glass replacement needs of existing buildings or glass for a new building to match an existing one. Viracon envisions this asset management tool can ensure the initial investment in glass is protected with an easy way to obtain that insulating glass make-up in the future.
