Portable Drill Press Helps Commercial Glaziers

decorative

The Strong Arm 5 is a portable drill press engineered for overhead and vertical steel drilling in commercial glazing, trailer manufacturing and industrial fabrication. It converts a handheld drill into a lever-powered press, multiplying user force for greater ease, speed and safety.

Product details

Applications include curtain-wall anchor holes, storefront framing, trailer and chassis fabrication and HVAC mounting.

This drill press converts 10 pound input to 155 pounds at the bit and has a typical drilling force of about 700 pounds. It's peak drilling force is about 1,300 pounds and enables fast penetration through structural steel with an average drilling time reduction of up to 75%.

This drill press has an overhead fatigue reduction of 80% and requires only a fraction of the operator’s energy. The tool also supports its own weight on the floor, scaffold, or lift, eliminating the need for the operator to hold it up. Drilling requires almost no operator energy, allowing greater focus on the task at hand.

Testing Summary

Field testing was performed on mild-steel vehicle frames, steel pipe, and 6061-T6 aluminum extrusions using both corded and cordless drills. Over 500 holes were drilled, up to ¾-inch in diameter. The extension-pole package allows a 4 to 9 foot reach for ceiling and façade work.

Safety and ergonomics

  • Helps control dangerous torque kickback
  • Reduces shoulder strain and injury risk
  • Decreases wrist injuries
  • Lowers user exposure to hot drill slag falling from overhead work
  • Minimizes the chance of being pinched or pulled off the work area
  • Compatible with standard ½-inch drills (corded or cordless)
