Owner and Steward of Garibaldi Glass Carey Mobius Passes Away

decorativeLongtime owner and steward of Garibaldi Glass Industries, Inc. Carey Mobius passed away on January 7, 2026, at the age of 61, surrounded by family.

Mobius' legacy

Born into the glass industry, Mobius' life and career were inseparable from the business his family built. He began working alongside his father at a young age, traveling to the company’s early Squamish location and sleeping on the cutting table as a toddler. When his father passed away at just 42, Mobius faced responsibility at an early age. Through periods of financial hardship, including rebuilding the company from a staff of 40 down to four, he steadily rebuilt the business brick by brick.

Over more than four decades in the industry, Mobius shaped not only glass, but people, partnerships and a culture grounded in the philosophy of “Never Ever Give Up.” His leadership was never about speed for its own sake or growth without intention. Instead, he championed thoughtful decision-making, continuous improvement, long-term partnerships, operational excellence and a belief that quality is not a slogan, but a system, one that begins long before fabrication and extends well beyond delivery.

According to his colleagues, Mobius' legacy is defined by these enduring principles:

  • Long-term relationships over short-term wins
  • Craftsmanship without shortcuts
  • Integrity, innovation, and perseverance
  • A belief that the strongest companies are built by investing in people first

In recent years, Mobius focused on guiding the next generation of his family and leadership team, not simply teaching them how to run a business, but how to lead with integrity, curiosity and heart. He worked alongside his children as they developed their own paths within the company. He believed true legacy is measured not only in growth or awards, but in the values carried forward and the people prepared to sustain them.

Glass industry and NGA contributions

Garibaldi joined the National Glass Association by way of the GANA combination in 2018. Garibaldi has been a member of GANA/NGA since at least 2002, which is as far back as GANA records go.

"Carey Mobius was such a unique personality, a force. He led gently, yet with intention and persistence. He saw needs and chose to get involved to address them. He found value in serving the broader industry, knowing his own business and people would equally benefit," says Urmilla Sowell, NGA vice president of advocacy & technical services. "That is shown through his formation of GlassDays, at which I had the privilege of attending and speaking, built for education and networking. It is also reflected in Garibaldi Glass' 25-plus year membership in the legacy GANA and NGA, including volunteerism shown by his employees to elevate the industry's resources. His mind, his care, his humor will all be deeply missed."

Mobius was a passionate advocate for industry education and collaboration. He founded GlassDay, an event created to bring the glass community together to learn, share, and elevate the industry as a whole.

He is survived by his family and an industry he cared for deeply. Mobius' final request was this: in lieu of flowers, please send purchase orders.
