Fireframes® Curtainwall Series from TGP

ADVERTISEMENT The Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania features a 23-foot freestanding fire-rated curtain wall that overlooks a café and helps open up views of the Ohio River beyond. The design team used Fireframes® Curtainwall Series from Technical Glass Products (TGP) to create the stunning expanse. The narrow fire-resistive-rated curtain wall system features a tall free span without any tie-back for structural support and visually complements an adjacent non-fire-rated glass curtain wall for a unified interior.

Unitized spandrel

Mapes Panels updated MapeSpan, spandrel glass laminated into a unitized panel with an interior finish. The panels are now available in thicknesses up to 6 inches and can be made with gypsum board interior substrate for use in fire-rated conditions. Panels can also have rabbeted interior edges to accommodate standard glazing pocket while allowing for higher overall R-value.

Fritted glass

Bendheim added a new type of exterior specialty glass, Lumi Frit, to its exterior glass offering. The Surface 1 fritted glass allows architects to create customized, brilliant white glass facades. Lumi Frit minimizes glass reflections, making patterns more pronounced and easier to view from a distance, providing an attractive option to highlight custom designs, say officials. By interrupting continuous reflections, the glass also becomes visible to birds, mitigating the risk of accidental bird strikes.

Fireframes® Curtainwall Series

The north side of the Audi Dealership of Birmingham building required fire-rated lot-line protection. The challenge was to blend the desired fire-rated glazing system with the sleek aesthetic of the non-rated system. The design team found their solution with a 2-hour fire-rated exterior Fireframes® Curtainwall Series system from Technical Glass Products. Its slender profiles and clear fire-rated glazing blend well with the adjacent non-rated curtain wall, while its strength allows for 21-foot free spans.

Bird glass

Walker Glass Co. expanded its AviProtek offering with four new bird-friendly glass designs. Three of the new designs use dot patterns and are typically used for guardrails, rain screens and insulating glass units—usually with a third-surface low-emissivity glass. These patterns have been introduced to align with municipal-level legislative requirements—either mandatory or voluntary. The fourth design, pattern 701, is a multi-directional random line design.
