Nominating company: Thompson Innovative Glass

Thompson Innovative Glass’ proprietary training platform, TIG University, serves as the foundation for the company’s Quality Management System that directs a workforce of over 120 employees, effectively addressing employee turnover and enabling ongoing transformation over time, say company officials. Designed to ensure consistency, scalability and technical excellence, TIG University offers over 130 regularly updated, job specific courses delivered through a structured, video-based curriculum. This approach enables standardized skill development across all departments, shifts and experience levels while maintaining flexibility needed in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

TIG’s training program is purpose-built for plant and shop floor personnel working directly in manufacturing. This targeted approach ensures that the curriculum addresses the practical needs and challenges faced by those working directly in the plant.

“The Best Internal Training Program category exists because a well-trained workforce isn't just a competitive advantage; it's the foundation of safety, quality, and innovation across every segment of our industry,” says Jenni Chase, vice president of workforce development, NGA. “When we recognize organizations that have made structured, intentional training a priority, we're sending a message to the entire industry: this work matters, and it deserves to be celebrated. TIG University is a wonderful example of an innovative training method; with its combination of online learning and hands-on mentorship.”

As TIG grew and employees increasingly cross trained into multiple roles, managing training data manually became unsustainable. To address this challenge, TIG implemented a Human Resource Information System (HRIS) with an integrated Learning Management System. This solution automated training records, improved transparency and collaboration, and enabled remote learning.

Employees can now complete video training in distraction free environments, accelerating certification timelines while maintaining rigorous standards. “TIG University has become a cornerstone of the company’s organizational culture and a key differentiator in its competitive labor market,” say company officials. The program accelerates new hire readiness, improves confidence and job satisfaction, and creates clear pathways for skill development and advancement. It has also contributed to measurable improvements in retention, with many returning “boomerang,” or returning, employees citing TIG University as a primary reason for rejoining the company.
