Frameless Hardware Company (FHC) recognizes industry pioneer Donald E. Friese on his inclusion in the Forbes Self-Made 250 list.
As Forbes notes, “The American Dream is built on the audacious belief that anyone can make it to the top. Since 1917, it has been the prime subject matter of this publication. So, in honor of America’s semi quincentennial, we feel uniquely qualified to rank the 250 greatest living self-made Americans.”
Friese's story
Orphaned at a young age, Friese began working on a dairy farm at just 12 years old. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving a three-year tour of duty before arriving in California with only $125 to his name. Determined to build a better future, he took a job in the warehouse at C.R. Laurence (CRL). Through relentless work ethic, vision, and leadership, Friese ultimately acquired the company—transforming it into a global force in the glass and glazing industry before its landmark $1.3 billion cash sale in 2015 to Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope (OBE).
Friese’s impact on the industry is immeasurable. His commitment to innovation, customer service, and operational excellence helped shape modern distribution and set new standards for what glaziers and fabricators could expect from a partner—not just a supplier.
Beyond business, Friese has dedicated himself to giving back through the Friese Foundation, supporting causes focused on children, veteran programs, glazier education, glass industry workforce development and community philanthropy—extending his legacy far beyond the industry he helped define.
Today, Friese continues to influence the next generation of industry leaders in his role as Chairman and Advisor to Frameless Hardware Company (FHC), where his experience and perspective help guide continued growth, innovation, and commitment to serving the glass and glazing community.
“Don’s story is the American Dream in its purest form,” says Chris Hanstad, President & CEO of FHC. “From humble beginnings to building one of the most influential companies in our industry, his journey is a testament to what’s possible with grit, vision, and relentless determination. We’re proud and fortunate to have him as a mentor and advisor.”
