In April, National Glass Association staff and consultants met with Representative Chuck Fleischmann's office (TN) asking them to reintroduce the SAFE Schools Act with the NGA's proposed language.
On Monday, April 27, Rep. Fleischmann introduced H.R. 8506. Rep. Fleischmann was a cosponsor of the SAFE Schools Act, which the NGA supported in past years. H.R. 8506's introduction into the House is both a representation of the glass industry's support and advocacy efforts, and another opportunity to continue to advocate for glass as a solution in school security.
The SAFE Schools Act establishes a grant program to improve school security, including securing glass in the building’s exterior through the installation of forced entry or bullet resistant glass.
What the NGA says
"The inclusion of our proposed language in this grant program is a testament to the critical role that high-performance glazing and security glass solutions play in protecting our schools,” says NGA President & CEO Lakisha Woods. "I'm proud of the work our team did to push this forward."
“I'm proud of the dedication and commitment of NGA's Advocacy Committee and the industry's support. We've supported the SAFE Schools Act in previous years, however, we were able to correct language that aligns with NGA's priorities on school security," says NGA’s VP of Advocacy & Technical Services Urmilla Sowell. "H.R. 8506's introduction into the House is both a representation of our industry's support and advocacy efforts, and another opportunity to continue to advocate for glass as a solution in school security. This week, NGA members will be on Capitol Hill advocating for cosponsors to support the bill and get it moved through Congress."
