Architects Look for Green Solutions
Glass Magazine Award winners deliver sustainable technologies for a greener built environment
In June, I caught up with glass and fenestration leaders on the show floor of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2026 expo. While the political climate may have shifted the emphasis away from green building, company reps I spoke with in San Diego agreed that sustainability remains a primary consideration for the architect and design community.
Thankfully, the glass industry can deliver the sustainable, secure and beautiful solutions that architects are looking for, and that is nowhere more evident than in this year’s Glass Magazine Award winners. This year’s 17 winners underscore the superlative technologies and people that make glass an indispensable part of the built environment. See the Glass Magazine Award winners.
As part of Glass Magazine’s, and the National Glass Association’s, commitment to engaging the design community, this year’s competition also featured a new judging panel of architects who selected a superlative project from the 77 number of nominations. The inaugural winner of the Architect’s Choice Award, the Shanghai Greenhouse Garden, represents the intersection of what architects want and what glass and fenestration products can deliver.
Adapted from a former industrial site, the greenhouse employs laminated glazing, along with passive and active environmental strategies, to ensure daylight and growth for the plants it shelters. Architects’ Choice judge Dan Hart, executive director of architecture at Parkhill, says the project “redefines the role of glass as both enclosure and environmental mediator.”
“The Shanghai Greenhouse Garden merits recognition for its seamless integration of advanced glazing technology, structural ingenuity and environmental performance,” says Hart. The project’s sustainable innovations helped it to win two additional awards; Runner Up for Project of the Year and Best Green Project.
Like this winner, several of the winning projects this year feature glass’s green potential in retrofit and renovation. The historic Gund Hall, winner of this year’s Best Specialty Glazing Award, employed VacuMax hybrid vacuum insulating glass by Vitro, with systems supplied by nominating company Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope. The retrofitted glass helps the iconic façade of Harvard University’s design school to achieve improved thermal efficiency, even in the Massachusetts climate.
Winners of the competition’s product categories also demonstrate the range of high-performance systems that reduce environmental impact and amplify aesthetics. ColorQuant Solar Design Technology, winner of this year’s R&D award, is a glass frit technology that facilitates the function of photovoltaic technology, allowing the building itself to generate electricity from solar radiation. With 500 possible colors available, the technology offers the aesthetic range and sustainable performance architects are looking for.
Sustainability is also a major value held by this year’s inaugural winner of the new Legacy Leadership Award, a reminder that it’s the people behind the products that make sustainable systems a possibility. Oliver Stepe, president and CEO of YKK AP America Inc., takes home the award this year, and under his leadership, sustainability has been an important aim for the company. During his tenure, YKK AP launched its first energy-efficient line of aluminum systems, while also sourcing a majority of its aluminum from low-carbon suppliers.
